Huicholes Block Roadwork in Jalisco, MX
Feb 25th, 2008
Indigneous Wixáritari (Huichol) from the community of Tuapurie de Santa Catarina Cuexcomatitlán, Jalisco, Mexico, have set up blockades and called for support to prevent the construction of a road through their territory.
The purpose of the road would be to connect the city of Huejuquilla el Alto with the city of Amatitán, in a region known for agriculture, livestock, logging, beekeeping, and tequila manufacture, which “requires the wood and water that the Wixáritari care for.”
A community assembly decided that the road provides no benefits to the community and should be opposed for 12 reasons, including the responsibility to defend and care for traditional territory according to ancestral knowledge.
