Two different utilities have filed applications with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to build new nuclear reactors in Georgia and South Carolina.
Southern Nuclear Operating Co said it filed an application is seeking a a combined construction and operating license to build two new reactors at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant near Waynesboro, Georgia.
SCANA Corporation’s South Carolina Electric & Gas Co (SCE&G) unit and South Carolina-owned Santee Cooper are seeking to build and operate one or two reactors at the Summer Nuclear Station in Jenkinsville, South Carolina.
The NRC’s review process takes 3-4 years. The two new bring to 9 the total number of applications that the NRC is currently considering, after 30 years of receiving none. The NRC says that it expects to receive up to 22 applications by 2010, for a total of 33 new reactors.
