Five men have been sentenced to 30 years in prison for each of the 26 indigenous campesinas (peasants) that they massacred in Guatemala in 1982, in order to clear the way for the construction of Chixoy Dam. The sentences will run concurrently, so none of the men will serve more than 30 years.

The men were convicted of being part of a paramilitary death squad that carried out a massacre at the Achi Maya village of Rio Negro, Guatemala. A total of 70 women and 170 children were tortured and killed on the pretext of being leftist sympathizers. The men of the village, having survived another massacre only a month before, were hiding in the hills at the time.

Rio Negro was a focal point for resistance to the construction of Chixoy Dam.
