Collision Closes Mississippi River and Cuts of Gulf Exports
Jul 24th, 2008
An oil and chemical spill caused by the collision of two ships has caused officials to close a 97-mile stretch of the Mississippi River near New Orleans, backing up major exports heading out to the Gulf of Mexico, including grain and coal. There are also three oil refineries in the region, but some are supplied by pipeline rather than boat, and none have reported being affected.
