Kahnawake Resists Quebec Superhighway
Aug 24th, 2008
The Kahnawake Mohawk community is resisting a deal between the Quebec government and the Mohawk Council tribal government to build a Montreal bypass superhighway, Quebec Autoroute 30, through their territory. Objecting to the illegal encroachment on unceded indigenous land for the highway, the Women Title Holders of the Rotino’shonni:onwe [the voice of the people] have served a “Notice of Objection” against the project. Kahnawake community members and members of Kahnawake’s Mohawk Traditional Council have erected a “No Trespassing” sign at the construction site. Such a sign was previously erected but was removed by police.
