http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Pipeline_im_Bau_2.JPGIn order to enable increased exploitation of the controversial Alberta Tar Sands as oil runs out around the world (got to keep the system lubricated!), Enbridge Inc. is proposing the construction of two massive pipelines to transport oil from the tar fields to a deep sea port in British Columbia. One 1200-mile pipeline would carry oil out from the fields, while the other would carry in chemicals needed to keep the oil flowing smoothly.

This plan has been categorically rejected by the Haida Nation, on the grounds that it would expose their territory to risk from oil tanker traffic.

“The Haida Nation will certainly not accept tanker traffic where we would bear the burden of risk and oil spills in our waters” said Robert Davis, a Representative of the Council of the Haida Nation. “Our livelihoods would be jeopardized.”

The pipelines are still only proposed, and sustained opposition from indigenous communities might still prevent them from ever getting approved.
