The Peruvian government has approved a plan by Perenco Oil and Gas to drill for oil in areas of the Peruvian Amazon known to be the territory of uncontacted indigenous groups, which have chosen to maintain their culture by deliberately avoiding contact with the colonizing civilization.
Recent photographic confirmation of one such group forced the Peruvian government to join Ecuador and Barrett Resources (now a Perenco subsidiary) to admit their existence. Perenco, however, still denies that any indigenous people live in the area it plans to drill in.
