Protesters from London Climate Action blockaded the entrance to the Peruvian Embassy in London on June 19, demanding the right to deliver a letter of protest calling for oil and gas companies in the Amazon to suspend their operations until the government agrees to peaceful negotiations with local representatives; for an independent and impartial inquiry into recent violence; and for the lifting of all charges against indigenous leader Alberto Pizango.

Indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon maintained blockades throughout the region for 70 days in protest of 10 free trade laws that would open up their territory to more oil and gas drilling, logging, agriculture and hydroelectric dams. After violent police assaults leading to the deaths of more than 84 people and an outpouring of international outrage, the government agreed to repeal two of the laws.
