On October 24, Utah approved the first tar sands mine in the United States, to be run by Canadian company  U.S. Oil Sands Inc., based in Calgary, Alberta.

In issuing the permit, the Department of Environmental Quality’s Water Quality Board is allowing the mine to proceed without a water pollution discharge permit, dismissing an appeal by the group Living Rivers.

Expect resistance to this attempt to bring Tar Sands mining to the Mountain West. Groups already working to stop the mine include Before it Starts and Utah Tar Sands Resistance.
