In France a massive land squat against an airport project faces another week of evictions. Resistance and repression have been intense.

The happenings of the last couple of days on the zone of the proposed airport project, Notre-Dame-des-Landes, Vigneux de Bretagne, and other nearby places have made some waves. Since Tuesday, October 16, the militia of the state has taken over the whole zone in an attempt to take control. With helmets, shields, guns and batons on their belts, grenade launchers and teargas canisters in their hands, these mercenaries come from all over France to re-establish the capitalist order and re-affirm the strength of the centralized democratic state. They know their job well. Occupying the strategic crossroads, prevent people from moving around, doing identity controls, copying down license plate numbers, destroying everything outside of the limits they have defined, evicting those in a place where they have been asked to leave, repressing those opposed to the system.

This is nothing extraordinary, it’s shit but it’s an everyday occurence. What the forces of order have been doing in Notre-Dame-des-Landes is exactly the same thing that they do every other day of the year. Making ID controls in the ghettos of the poor, destroying traveler and Roma camps, terrorising migrants, protecting the interests of capital and the state abroad. However it’s not exactly the same thing. Because the middle classes are interested in some problems linked to the proposed airport project and the sympathy in general towards the struggle against the airport, the cops have decided to be a little careful about what they’re doing.

The past couple of days, we have felt surrounded. We have found that the problems that affect us, also affect a lot of other people. There have been solidarity actions and demonstrations because everywhere there are people oppressed by the same policies of urbanization, and state control of land and what happens there.
