As the World Burns: 50 Simple Things You Can Do to Stay in Denial
by Derrick Jensen and Stephanie McMillan
While most of Derrick Jensen’s work is chock full of compelling reasons to take down the system, this graphic novel with Minimum Security creator Stephanie McMillan is a great and accessible primer on the concept!

History

Inevitable Revolutions
by Walter LaFeber

A good history of Central America, with a focus on how the US has consistently intervened to guarantee its access to the region’s resources (the book focuses on agriculture, but does mention mineral resources, which are increasingly important). Shows how a wide variety of injustices flow from the need to maintain a colonial economic system.

Strategy

The Art of War
by Sun Tzu
The classic of military strategy, still highly relevant today in both the literal and metaphoric sense.

The Book of Five Rings
by Miyamoto Musashi
Another classic of military strategy, still widely studied by business executives seeking this great samurai’s advice on how to destroy one’s enemies. Like Art of War, Book of Five Rings functions on both a literal and metaphoric level.

“Down With the Empire, Up With the Spring!”
from Do Or Die #10 – (available online as text or PDF)
A late 1990s analysis of the state of the environmental movement, with suggestions for how to be as strategic as possible given small numbers and the scale of the ecological crisis. While lacking much of a “take the offensive” component, this remains a good strategic analysis with elements that are still highly relevant.

Endgame
by Derrick Jensen
In this massive work, Derrick Jensen talks first about why civilization must be destroyed, then moves on to how we might accomplish that. Don’t read this expecting much in the way of specific tips (see Direct Action, above, if that’s what you’re looking for); this is a strategic work, not a tactical one. In particular, we recommend the sections on bottlenecks and fulcra.
